Context

Patients who went through cancer are monitored closely during their chemotherapy treatment. Unfortunately, the side effects of the treatments are not monitored the same way. One of those side effects is called “Chemo-brain”, which refers to the aftermath of heavy chemotherapy, leaving patients forgetful about simple things in their daily life. This ultimately leaves patients to feel lost and isolated from society. The French association OnCogite helps these patients by retraining their brains through neurologic exercises and activities. Since founded in 2019, the association has been growing fast and is now at an important turning point. Oncogite’s current website was build right at the start, and over time, new pages have been added to the site without re-thinking the structure.

Problem

In order to keep providing help for patients, OnCogite must meet three goals: get found by medical professionals and patients, receive funding from partners, and recruit neurologists to facilitate the activities with patients. Unfortunately, the current website doesn't reflect these goals.

CHALLENGE

How to communicate OnCogite’s offering and needs to its different audience ?

How to communicate OnCogite’s offering and needs to its different audiences ?

Solution

After understanding OnCogite’s goals, the audience's needs and the current website analytics, I conducted an evaluation of the current website and re-designed the information architecture as well as a new landing page for web and mobile.

  • Site structure

  • Landing page Desktop

  • Landing page Mobile

Process

Evaluation

During a first meeting with the team, I got to understand the organisation, its different target audiences and needs, as well as goals for the future.

I started the evaluation by analysing the website's analytics. This informed me with:

  • Which devices to design for: in this case, equally for mobile and desktop

  • The complexity of content required - according to time spend on page

  • The type of content required - according to new visitors

Then, I performed a review of the current website and noticed three main issues:

  • Confused first impression: the message and the audience aren't clear

  • Lots of content: hard to read copy, some content aimed for other platforms and duplicated content

  • Complicated site structure: the website isn't easily scannable, many pages and under pages

Design

Based on that, I build a new site structure and reworked the content.

Current site structure:

New site structure:

Main changes to the site structure:

  • Navigation: created separated sections for “patient” & “pro”

  • Reorganised the important content under theses two sections and moved the secondary content to the footer

  • Removed the remaining sections and its under pages. In total, there are only 4 main pages and 7 secondary pages via the footer left.

Then I designed the landing page starting with pen and paper, and digitally in Figma

The team and I are currently reviewing the proposals and working on the content. Since the organisation is working through a very exciting change that will be reflected in the new site, the shipping and launch of the new site will happen in a few months.

Restrospect

I enjoyed working on this project, as I appreciate OnCogite’s works for the healthcare industry. Here is what I learned:

  • To communicate with teams in the healthcare industry that are not familiar with web or tech

  • To work with existing content and limited website hosting plateform

  • To create a structure as simple as possible, so it’s easy to build and requires almost no maintaining for the team

  • To re-organize and rewrite content, which is especially challenging as the topic and lingo aren't familiar to me

Thank you for reading 👌🏼
